Aiken Technical College's Dynamic Dialogues Guest Lecture Series Celebrates Fifth Year

Aiken Technical College (ATC) is celebrating the fifth year of its Dynamic Dialogues Guest Lecture Series by aligning guest lecture topics with themes featured in the book Burning Bright by author Ron Rash.

The book features short stories covering varying topics and is the common read for students in the College’s English classes for the 2020-21 academic year.

“It is wonderful to see how the Dynamic Dialogues series has emerged as an ATC tradition where we can engage our community in discussions around topics of the day. This year’s focus is especially meaningful as we will explore themes from our common read as part of the campus Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) activities. This endeavor underscores our commitment to provide students a quality educational experience that engages them as learners beyond the classroom,” said Melissa Johnson, director of the Office of Recruitment & Student Experience.

The 2020-21 Dynamic Dialogues Guest Lecture Series will kick off Wednesday, November 4, with a webinar featuring Dr. Gary Senn, director of the Ruth Patrick Science Center and DuPont Planetarium at the University of South Carolina Aiken. He will present on the topic, “From Falling Stars to Defying Gravity.”

The webinar will start at 11:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public. Participants can visit to join the webinar. There will also be a drawing for door prizes.

The College will hold a second webinar Wednesday, November 18 with guest presenter Chris Judge, director of the Native American Heritage Center in Lancaster, SC. He will speak on Indigenous culture and shifts. Those interested in this webinar should visit for more information.

The College will announce dates and topics for the spring guest lectures at a later date.

ATC’s common read effort is a part of its new “Read, Write, Achieve” initiative to improve literacy skills and encourage people to explore the joy of reading and writing. The initiative is outlined in the College’s QEP, which launched this academic year.

"We have already seen excitement among students, faculty, and staff about this year's common read, Burning Bright, and the activities planned in conjunction with it. It's inspiring to see the power of literature to bring a community together,” said Stacey Nichols, department chair for the Communications Department and co-chair of the QEP Enactment Team.
